Behind the shortlist

Good advice should show its working.

Here’s what our guides know, what they infer and what you should check before spending your money.

01

Start with your needs

Your budget is a ceiling. We use your answers to explain the specs that matter, the compromises to expect and the extras you can skip.

02

Look for the right evidence

Manufacturer pages establish listed specifications and compatibility. Independent measurements are needed for claims such as real battery life, camera quality, noise cancellation and sustained performance.

03

Make the trade-offs visible

A useful shortlist explains who each product suits, what it gives up and which details still need checking. Missing evidence stays unknown.

Read the label

Listed isn’t the same as tested.

Catalog candidate
A product included for you to explore. Its presence, price fit or guide match does not establish an overall recommendation.
Recommendation
An editorial choice needs an explicit use case, evidence and a stated compromise. Guide matches indicate how documented specs relate to your answers.
Personally tested
Only a clearly identified hands-on review can establish this. Product cards, manufacturer images and Max’s explanations do not imply we used a device.
Follow the evidence

Different sources answer different questions.

Manufacturer information
Useful for exact variants, ports, dimensions, update promises and advertised features. “Up to” figures are claims under the maker’s conditions.
Independent evidence
Reviews and measured results can help establish real performance. Results must apply to the same model and configuration; another variant is not proof.
Our interpretation
Advice such as prioritising comfort or storage is an explanation of a trade-off, not a measured product result. Unknowns should remain visible.
Before you buy

A price is a dated reference.

Check the product’s checked date, variant and source. Listed prices, starting prices and MRP describe different things. Prices are not live, and availability can change by seller, postcode, colour and configuration.

Bank discounts, exchange values, coupons and sale offers need their own conditions. Confirm the ordinary payable price, delivery, warranty and return terms at checkout. A reference price does not reserve stock or guarantee the best deal.

Commercial relationships

Know what supports the story.

Commercial support needs a clear label alongside the relevant content. A policy link in the footer is not a substitute. These are the distinctions we use:

Sponsored or paid work
Work commissioned or paid for by a brand is identified as advertising or sponsored content. Sponsorship is not evidence that a product is the best option for you.
Gifted products and review loans
If a brand provides a product, a loan or another material benefit connected to coverage, that relationship needs to be stated with the coverage. A supplied unit does not itself prove we tested it; hands-on claims need an identified review.
Affiliate links
Some shopping links can earn us a commission when you make a qualifying purchase. Relevant content needs an affiliate notice close to the buying context. The retailer or referral service handles purchase attribution under its own terms and privacy policy.
Independent editorial information
A manufacturer source link or product's inclusion in the catalog does not by itself establish a paid relationship. Editorial assessments still need a stated use case, evidence, trade-offs and visible uncertainty.

Some older articles contain Amazon shortlinks. Those articles now display an affiliate notice through the shared article layout; their original wording and shopping URLs remain intact. Historical prices and expired offers still need checking at the retailer.

For PR, review enquiries and partnerships, get in touch. An enquiry does not guarantee coverage or a favourable assessment. Please report a missing or unclear disclosure so we can review it.

Who is Max?

Max is our fictional guide persona. His on-site lessons are authored guidance; assistant handoffs create a prompt for the AI app you choose. AI responses can be wrong or outdated. Ask for sources and verify the exact model before buying. Your brief is only sent to an external assistant when you paste or submit it there.

Where do product images come from?

Catalog images are sourced from product and brand listings, with original image URLs recorded in our image source ledger. A manufacturer photograph shows the product, not a hands-on test. Family images may differ from the exact colour or configuration; check the listing.

How are corrections handled?

Tell us which product, claim or price needs attention and share a source where possible. The report composer prepares an email for you to send. It does not create a support ticket, promise a response time or update the catalog automatically.
